Partner Spotlight - Wakefern/ShopRite

NJAES-Rutgers Cooperative Extension's SNAP-Ed Support Network and Wakefern/ShopRite have had a long collaborative relationship benefiting New Jersey residents. Their most recent collaboration has been calcium health events at select ShopRite stores throughout New Jersey.

Calcium health events at store level

Currently campaign materials are being used at stores approved as food stamp eligible by US Food and Nutrition Service.  Non-eligible stores may use campaign materials after paying a stipend.

Campaign implementation plan can be tailored to each stores preference and needs. One example of store level participation has been calcium-themed health events/fairs, which have included, but are not limited to:

  • Sampling of calcium rich, affordable snacks (primarily using house brand products). Examples include:
    • 1% regular and chocolate milk
    • Calcium fortified orange juice
    • Non-fat/low- fat yogurt
    • Cubed low-fat cheese
    • Calcium fortified cracker
  • Dissemination of campaign materials directly to consumers by Rutgers University, Department of Nutritional Science undergraduate students and campaign staff.
  • Placement of campaign posters and tear-pads in stores before, during and after scheduled events.
Between September 2007 and September 2008 we have:
  • held 27 calcium health events
  • increased in-store sales of the calcium rich snacks sampled during event by 45%
  • distributed:
    • 1500 brochures
    • 3850 tear-pad sheets
    • 269 posters
Potential Future Plans
  • PSA's developed and played at register monitors
  • Survey's to assess change in calcium knowledge as result of events
  • Permanent and on-going Calcium: Select to Protect store displays
  • Shopping cart ads
